A couple of newly discovered articles have surfaced on TIQ that would seem to show the exuberant reports by a couple of Segway detractors, of the imminent death of Segway, came a little early.

Or as Mark Twain is reported to have said. "The reports of my death are premature.

The first two quotes concern the Santa Monica Police Dept. The other concerns the glee shown by at least one TIQ poster when he concluded Segway had been banned in San Francisco.

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
$9,000 while the traffic cars average $33,000 a piece.
“There is a substantial savings,” Muir said...
“It gives us a lot more flexibility,” said Orlando
Imperial, a traffic patrolman. “I have to say I haven’t
found a drawback yet.”
Traffic services manager Don Williams added,
“There is really endless possibilities for these.”

Another quote from the article:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The SMPD has not decided if it will
purchase any of the vehicles but because
officers and operators are so impressed
with them, it may be only a matter of time
before officers are seen zipping through
downtown on them daily.

i live in sf and as far as i have heard the bill that defines Segway as an "electric personal assistive mobility device." has been passed by the local government and has been passed along to Gov. Davis. Davis of course has gotten quite a few financial contributions from Doerr.

The SF Supervisor is against the Segway, but that does not mean it has been banned from use in the city. Only that it is a possibility. Here are some articles backing this up:

it seems though that people here believe that Segway has already been banned and that just isn't the case.

A quote from that last link:

quote:Supporters of the bill include several law enforcement agencies including the California Highway Patrol.

"We tested it a little," said Tom Marshall, a CHP spokesman. "It's almost impossible to run into somebody on it. They're so slow it would not really be safe to have them out in traffic."
