Stephen, I hope you notice this thread. The new building is in Dubai.

In addition to its beautiful architecture, this building is unique in its parking system. It's going to be one of the largest Robotic Parking sytems in the world. 1,200 spaces all completely automated and computerized.

I've known the inventor, Gerhard Haag, for about ten years now. It's an ingenious system which uses computer controlled palettes to stack the cars somewhat like you see in some marinas which store boats on large racks.

Drivers drive into one of numerous bays and onto a palette. They leave the car turned off and locked, and when they leave the bay the car is shuttled inside, lifted, and slid into an open rack space. Nothing ever touches the car, and they can be stacked more closely to each other.

This offers much improved security, both from theft and vandalism, and from damage from opening doors of adjacent cars. There's also less pollution, as the cars are not running while in the garage proper.

When the customer returns to a bay, the system delivers their car within a few minutes, and it's facing outwards, ready to drive away.

Check out Robotic Parking's website. (http://www.roboticparking.com)

Sounds like a beautiful environment in which to live and work. Image Segway owners in the building as well!

a video is worth 30,000 words per second.

Skypark's system is different than Robotic Parking's. RP's seems more substantial to me with no smaller moving parts in contact with the vehicle. With RP each vehicle has its own entire palette. Those smaller rotating parts need sensors and hydraulics to function properly and would seem to be more prone to error or breakdown, or at least require more maintenance.

What if a car's tire goes flat while inside the garage? The sagging rubber or undercarriage of the car could catch on something and make a real mess. With RP's system, the car would simply sink down on its palette, and not create any situation with the mechanism.

Check out RP's videos, too, on their site.

Their site is a nightmare. Care to throw out some links?

P-r-e-t-t-y cool! I just imagine Segway Dealers minds thinking how they can adapt the idea for Segway storage in their dealerships!

It looks like the square shape may conserve more space than the round Autostadt (http://www.autostadt.de/portal/site/www/menuitem.bfc77284986e65234e72de10100000f7/?vgnextoid=fa512cb11c51f010VgnVCM10000070c7b20aRCR D).

I couldn't get your link to work, but this one might be close: Autostadt photos. (http://www.snopes.com/photos/automobiles/parkade.asp)

Dan,

Got you PM, thanks.

These building are under construction at the Dubai International Financial Center (DIFC), which is, in simple terms, our Wall Street. However, DIFC will be more than "Wall Street", it will have a giant underground Shopping Center, it will have a "village" with 55,000+ housing units, it will have hotels and nightlife, and it will have an above ground park / promenade running down the center.

All in all, it will be a self-contained city within a city. If all goes as planned, we will open our second showroom smack dab in the middle of DIFC in early May, giving us access to the exact demographic we want....and a great place for an additional tour.

Watching the Dubai World Cup as I type right now on ABC. I was looking for some of your many i2's you mentioned were working there. Lots of good looking horses and pretty ladys but so far, no i2's.

Races ended hours ago, I've been home for two hours.

We had seven units all over the place but all at the front of the grandstand. This was the first time in seven years that I haven't had a table at the DWC...felt strange being there and working.

Keep looking, hopefully you will see one or two.......but only one i2, all the rest are i180s.
