And how many people stood in line to get the first I2 and not the first X2?

We are, for sure doing something wrong.

That Ps3 will be old tech within the next 9 months, and no one will have much interest in it 3 years down the road. While the I-167 is something that everyone still wants.

I dont think they're crazy enough to pay his asking price, especially when the receipts pictured in the ad show he only paid $645 for each one.

Of course, as Heinlein said: "Never underestimate the power of human stupidity"

Not to get off on too far of a tangent, but the ps3 will be far from old tech in 9 months. However, I can't deny the fact that nobody will be interested in it. ;)

We have a term on the gaming boards: "LOL SONY"

So you're saying I should sell the PS3 I picked up this morning for an X2 + $3500? ;-)

I would do it in a heartbeat. You aren't going to get 600$ worth of fun out of that machine anytime soon. I could have 600$ worth of fun on an x2 in about an hour.

That was just a joke. Yeah, I know the PS3 is expensive and it's debatable how much ROI I'll get out of it. However, I could never sell the thing for the kind of markups people are asking for. Heck, I don't think I could sell it for any profit at all. Yes, it's just supply and demand and not every unit will go to a kid (after all the 20-30 age demographic is a huge one for Sony), but I don't like the idea just the same.

Regardless, I won't be selling it as the system is a birthday gift for me as I'm the guy who loves having the latest and greatest.

The local evening news interviewed a bunch of people who waited in line last night. Out of about a half dozen people, only one said they would keep it, all the rest were planning to ebay it. So we mostly have a bunch of folks with a desire to make a few quick bucks causing a false rush on supply. What they don't understand is that if 50%+ of the units are on ebay the value isn't that high. It's creative and I hope they can turn a dollar or two for their time.

Maybe it's time to pick up a PS2... nah.

I don't understand what is false about rush. What does that mean?

It's getting rediculous.

I could understand the Wii possibly having a wait starting in the morning before.

But for a PS3, it's seriously getting stupid. Not only is it the most expensive next-generation console, but it's price is gonig to drop fast. Waiting 5-7 months will mean it'll be cheaper, and you won't be missing much. Anyone who's willing to get the PS3 must have a small collection of PS2 games by now.

I'll just play Kingdom Hearts or Star Wars Battlefront until the price goes down, and I'm perfectly content Destroying All Humans(twice!!!!) on my old systems.

Perhaps I misspoke, I meant that the rush to buy consoles may be artificial because of all the people intending to just turn it over on ebay. In any case, we will know shortly if the real demand for units is actually that high.

It's called insanity, and I mean clinically. Perhaps they're "happier" hidden away in their cribs going further down and out with their silly games.

They probably wouldn't survive for very long, anyway, out in the bright light and fresh air on a Segway.

They don't seem to survive very long online either. Self induced sleep deprivation is a bad thing.

It seems to relate to "newness" and I'll be that people said similar things when the first Segways appeared.

The rush to buy consoles isn't made artificial just because people intend to turn them over on ebay. The whole idea of selling them on ebay wouldn't be viable unless there were people there to buy them. This is a simple case of supply and demand. The people on ebay are fuelling the demand, and Sony only had something like 300,000 units ready at launch. That's why these people camped out all week. Nintendo had something like 800,000 ready.

It would be artificial if the units that end up on ebay didn't get bid up and these early buyers lose money. A quick check shows the average to be about $1000.00 so the speculation may pay off. It also may mean that Sony could have charged $1000 for the first few months but people would cry about Sony price gouging. That does not mean that the rush isn't artificial since even an artificial rush results in a rapidly reduced general supply which in turn drives up the price.

Consider a company IPO. Investor A buys a lot of stock early because he thinks other people feel the company is popular and demand for the stock will be high. This investor buys the stock even though he doesn't think the company will do well in the long run but, it is important for him to buy early when they feel the price is at a low. If enough investors are doing the same thing as investor A, you have a situation where the initial rush is artificial because the demand is artificial. One might call this a bubble and some people will certainly make a few bucks. I can only hope they do since, as I said before, they certainly put in the time.

Also note that the latest numbers I can find would show about 40,000 PS3 units and 130k Nintendos still on the shelves if your numbers are correct. Maybe they are the less desirable PS3s or people just don't know where to find them. Either way, it couldn't matter much less to me, I've just been over to planetboredom for a laugh.

I guess I'm still not clear on the functional difference between a false rush and a real one.
