View Full Version : Car carrier for Segway

Since I have two Segways on order, I have thought ahead regarding how am I going to transport them. I don't look forward to lugging 85 pounds into the back of my SUV, and not sure how they will fit.

I was able to locate a cargo carrier that attaches to my trailer hitch receiver at a reasonable price. It is made of composite (aka, plastic) but is rated at 500 pounds and very light. The one that I bought flips up when not in use and is priced at $125. They make one just like it that doesn't flip up for about half that price ($69 at NorthernTool).

Compared to some of the medical type carriers that have a ramp included but only hold one Segway that I have seen on the web for upwards of $400, this looks like a good deal.

Here's a link to the site that I bought from. I can't tell how high it is off the ground, but I don't think I'll need much of a ramp to motor the Segway onto the carrier.

Interesting! I guess you'd secure it... by tying the Segway to the platform somehow? It certainly looks like it will hold 2 Segways sitting side-by-side, facing front or back. Thanks for bringing it to the forum cstull.

Yeah, I looked at many and some didn't meet the specs for a Segway. They were either not deep enough for the Segway footprint, or too narrow to hold two. Of course, I have to qualify my recommendation by saying that I don't have the Segways OR the carrier yet, but on paper the specs work.

I should have mentioned that I bought a bungee device that looks like a cargo net and has a whole bunch or hooks on it so I plan to lay this "net" over the two Segways and then attach the hooks to the carrier.

See the picture at the bottom of this link.

The bicycle holder looks like it would be a good thing to secure the segway to, also. I realize that it doesn't work with the flip up model, like you've ordered.

HI Craig,

I've got a H-duty ski rack for my "P" 911C4S and with the shape of the car and the "non-marking tires on the SEGWAY" ,I bet I won't need a rack.

See if you can get a Ski rack for your sportscar and just "drive-it-up"

You may want also want to check MedExpress Ambulance..I know that's wierd..but they have Segways that they are using in their service.

They needed a way to transport and developed a Segway carrier..it's made of aluminum and fits into the hitch like a bike rack.

Here's their site http://www.medexpress.net/

Hi folks. I've been looking into ramps to get my Segways into the back of my Yukon. I'm planning on "Power Assist"ing them up a ramp or track ramps and them rotating them so that they sit with the wheels to the outside of the truck and the handles passing each other at midpoint (69 so-to-speak).

There is a web site that offers seperate ramps that fold in half at this web site:

http://www.handi-ramp.com/Tracks.htm

but they are kind of pricy, a little heavy and a little too wide- 6".

Then I found this site for telescoping ramps with the same disadvantages. http://www.discountramps.com/R60003.jpg

Then there is a site where you can buy the feet and top brackets and build your own out of two pieces of lumber.

http://www.ramps.com/ramps/truck_use.htm
http://www.ramps.com/ramps/ramp_feet.htm
http://www.ramps.com/ramps/ramp_kits.htm

I think that's the way I'm going to go. Anyone have any ideas suggestions?

All the ramps seem cumbersome and a hassle to stow in the vehicle.

I'm going to wait to get ramps and see if I can just back up to a sidewalk or some other "ledge" so I can motor it right onto the carrier.

Need the segways first though!

I have got several ideas of how to make at least three different types of Segway carriers using your vehicle hitches. There are a few problems with designing them and how to protect my ideas from say, hitch makers. I feel your pain in regards to towing your Segways to your desired destinations. I want to help and believe I can. There are so many options involved such as vehicle type, height, width, type of hitch recievers needed and problems associated with, how difficult it would make it to get into your trunk, tailgate, or rear of your vehicle with the types of hitches installed being mentioned here. In several of my initial designs I have quick hook-ups for mounting your HT's and am trying different variations to make them universal as possible...

Then there's another problem, maybe some of you can help me with. I don't have access to a Segway to get the proper measurements I need for my designs.

I need to know?

* exact width (thickness) of the wheels (inches is fine) hate metric...
* width of the wheelbase (from outside edge to outside edge of the tires)
* total height (diameter) of the tires... 19" ?
* widths (diameter) of the T-bar column above and below the turnbuckle adjustment... 2" & 1-3/4" ?
* height to the top of the turnbuckle when the HT base is level and when the t-bar is verticle.(L)... 24" ?
* Is the t-bar flush with the front of the wheels when verticle or is it recessed a bit, by how much?...inset 4" ?
* width of the base from front to back.
* distance from the bottom of the base to the ground at the heel (rear) when the base is level and when the t-bar is verticle. (which means the base will be at an angle somewhere between 45 to 60 degrees).

If someone could give me these dimensions, I would be most grateful. I'm pretty sure I got the mechanics down, but not the dimensions. I am sure you would like the designs I have in mind.

Does anyone know of someone or a business in Indianapolis or close proximity that has purchased a HT. I also have other ideas for accessories, too down the road. Anyone with suggestions on how I should go about presenting my designs with caution, I would appreciate your input also. Any suggestions anyone has will be helpful. Thanks...:)

Last week I just got an Infiniti FX35 and my Seg is rolling easily in and out with my ramps. I feel like this car's rear truck area was designed by a Seg owner. Check it out. I couldn't be happier with how fast I can get them in and out.

I have this carrier and do not like it. It is not very sturdy and if you take one Segway off, it bends the braces to the side. I would not recommend this carrier at all.

Larry. Which ramp do you have? The Handi-Ramp?

John:
I have the Cargo Carrier that is listed above. I don't have ramps for it. I just lifted them onto the carrier. It really didn't work well at all for me.

Which carrier? I realize you don't have the Offngo , but I'm curious which of the above you're referring to?
