Pilot, co-pilot, and navagator/glide atttendent. (My two year old doesn't like it when you call her a stewardess...)

Karl,

Best wishes on the 4th!!!!

Do you really glide with your kids on, or only stand still? My 4 year old has been dying to get on the HT with me but I didn't think it was possible.

If its doable (never mind safe) I'd sure like to try it.

He's the second person I've seen do it. There are pictures around somewhere of Freddy at SegFest 1 who used to ride with his wife and daughter on the same unit. I saw them at Bonita Springs with a child sitting on a fender, husband and wife on the HT.

As you've gathered, definitely NOT recommended by LLC, probably not as wise as it could be, but definitely a personal choice, and it has been done.

I've given rides to quite a few small kids by stepping forward and letting them stand behind me and hang on to my waist. I put my right hand behind their back, just case they might let go. The control definitely isn't as good, so you have to take it slow.

Segway - What's holding you up?

Again, I defer to the smarts I had in buying an "E"

One of the hazards of having children on a seg is the unpredictablity of what they will do.

Since I have an E, it has a lower cargo structure, which has a bar that goes accross the front of the seg... My daughter holds onto it.

It also prevents my children from stepping off the front.

It is no coincedence that my son is on the side with the large side bag, and my daughter on the side with the small battery compartment. He cannot go forward nor sideways, and neither can she.

For safety sake, she stands the whole time on my left foot. This way, if I need, her weight can be lifted by my ankle and will not effect braking.

My son is 5 and is able to more dependably take and react to my verbal instructions.

I also carry sufficient balast in my belly to compensate for their weight. (I am not skinny, and personally more than double their combined weight)

I also have them in front of me as I believe it is far more important to have my greater weight toward the back to facilitate stopping, rather in front to facilitate going...

I also require them to wear helmets to ride.

I am very good on the machine. I consider myself to also be a very protective father. A good measure of safety is not just what you do, as children die in car trips to the market all the time, but rather to know what you can do, and what you cannot do...

I believe more people get in trouble by presuming their own abilities to be better than they are, rather than taking a considered risk and doing reasonable safety precautions that are called for...

All this said, it is far safer for me to have my kids on my seg than to have them in my mother-in-law's minivan... (Just an example, no slam intended on Peggy...)
