Open Wheel Cutout

Has anyone though about removing the recessed area on the wheel. It would make the wheel look like the original grey wheel. Would there be any structural issues?

I would imagine that there would be structural issues in that the original open design was cast from one mold, whereas cutting bits off the currently manufactured wheel(s), would decrease the integrity of the entire structure.

This is purely amateur conjecture, I have no engineering experience to back that up. But common sense tells me that I'd trust the original one-piece mold wheel rather than one which was modified aftermarket.
