View Full Version : Why are the Kick Stands so flimmsy?

It finally happened. Woke up this morning to find my kick stand broken. I just tried gluing it back together with no luck. I'm thinking about machining an aluminum or steel one to replace it, but I'm wondering why SEGWAY didn't have them machined already.

Is there a reason why they want the kick stands "breakable"?

Are my best bets buying a new one or melting mine into one peice again?

I rent and we would go through about 3 stands per segway per month. I started making unbrakable kickstands for my rental fleet and now sell them also check out www.segwayjunkyard.com or www.segwayofoakland.com thanks steve steinberg 510 832-2429

Your kickstand was made to be broken just in case you happen to be gliding along and it would get caught on something. It is a lot less expensive to replace the kickstand then having to replace a bone in your body or a handlebar on a segway. I would definately recommend sticking with the stock stand unless you plan to do a tour business or something down those lines.

Because the kick stand is invisible when gliding, if folds up and out sight under the base, facing back. If you were to back up in grass, for instance, it could get caught and deploy on it's own, while backing up.

If it did, you would surely spill unless it broke.

Another issue is if the machine is parked on stand, if someone got on and the machine was on but not in balance mode, the rider detects would engage and the machine would try to go into balance mode. When this happens, if not breakable, again, the machine would spill.

If the machine has an aluminum stand, in a similiar configuration, the machine would still have the power to break the metal and have a sharp spike exposed.

All of the aftermarket stands that I have seen mount differently to avoid this problem.

This topic has been discussed to death.

I find it an interesting topic, because I have an 'E' model and rarely use my parking stand. I do have a wooden one that I have made that I find to be quite workable. (Because of my configuration, my machine has a far higher center of gravity, so the parking stand is less workable. My wooden stands that I make hold the platform at a different angle...)

Yossi,

I believe Karl has a heavily modified E series. The E series with it's saddlebags already has a different center of gravity than a regular old I series.

But Karl, I bet has a few "tricks" up his sleeve on his machine. he he he

Segway City did one, but his wife recently passed away and he's selling his Segway stuff, because it's so painful for him to remember - so I wouldn't contact him, unless he reposts something.

Have a few available for $25, includes shipping.

Also, the new i180's are supposed to have a "new and improved" kickstand which doesn't break as easily, but is still safe. Or something like that. Last I heard, the first i180's going out the door still have the old-style parking stands.

People beat me to it.

A stock e machine has a lower cargo structure, with bags over each fender and a large handlebar bag. Furthermore, for the e-series to hover in e-stand (Balance with no rider) it is suggested that at least some weight is in the side bags. I think I was told 10 pounds. All this structure is well above the axle.

An empty i series has almost all the weight below the axle and surely the center of gravity is below the axle as well.

That was stock. I pretty much have more crap, er, ah ... Acoutriments, on my machine than any you are likely to see. Kind of like the difference between the image of a Pickup truck advertisement on television, and the image of the Beverly Hillbillies driving cross country...

Unfortunately, mine is not the stock pickup...

By the way, my avitar is what a stock e looks like...

yeah, mine is a new i180. Let the record show I got the kick stand to last for 2 months. After reading all the posts I've decided not to even bother fixing it. Leaning it up against a wall works fine for me. I do that while using the kick stand to keep it out of the way of others anyway.

Thanks for all the replys.

I still can't believe how awesome this thing is. It's so amazing how nice everything seems when you're gliding around stress free. Stress free of traffic, gas, lower back pain, lower back sweat, clutch leg, traffic laws, poeple beeping at you to go on green, looking for parking, worrying about smashing, annoyed with all the little things that don't work in your car. We are very lucky people.

My segway is over 2 years old and still on the first kickstand. Have had a few close calls.

How often do you use your Segway? I hope mine lasts 2 years (the Segway I mean.) I use mine A LOT!

I broke mine soon after I got the Seg over two years ago. Stupid mistake. I had it up on the car hitch carrier and demo'd how it worked to someone and forgot to retract it......then when I powered the Seg down the ramps, it caught and broke off! Seg replaced it and I have only extended it a couple times since then. I almost always lean it against something in the balance mode. I find it takes hardly any battery to do this even while having lunch or looking at something in a store. Of course it is always within quick reach in case someone looks like they are going to step aboard or grab the handlebars! I also have a couple door wedges I put under the wheels once in a while if I want to shut it down to keep it from kicking back.
