The specific stabilization system is new. The use of Segs for film-making and TV is not.

The point is that Segway PTs are STILL used in such applications.

I am constantly amazed at how often people like to see video of segways or more often, segway operators doing something awkward.
I think it may because there is something fundamentally different about the segway's ability to self balance that makes people ill at ease, even among those of us who use them. A famous cameraman failure from two years ago? Since then, I wonder how many other camera or cameraman failures there have been that did not involve segways. I can only imagine thousands of percent more, but they are not videoworthy. Just some guy with a camera falling over, or some rail system that had a hiccup. I see 'reminders' of segway failures all the time. People reminding me of Hesslin dying on the segway, and telling me it was Kamen. The latest was just this last weekend. That was years ago. And, of course, it was not accurate (as I was told again how the inventor died by driving off a cliff). To this day, I still do not know how Hesslin actually died, only that he was dead at the bottom of a bluff with the segway near him. We all know he may have lost control and gone over the cliff, and died from the impact. We all know he may have backed up too far, gone over the cliff, and died from the impact. We all know he may have had a heart attack, and glode for 1/2 mile not quite dead, and not in control. We just do not know, but it was still years ago. How many bicyclists have died in the same period. I suspect many. How many bike shop owners? I suspect a couple. How many of us have seen video of it? I suspect none. I have never understood the alure of watching videos of people doing dumb things and getting hurt. There are lots of videos of people on segways doing dumb things, and while most get up and walk away, I have fallen on my segway, and I suspect that each and every fall did cause some discomfort, even if not a broken bone. (And I am sure there were a couple of those too) I don't see many other sports or activity where the failure is so well triumphed over the victory so often, and for so long...

How long ago did George Bush had that little Segway tumble accident?
It was June 2003, and pedestrians who awaiting traffic light with me still remind me of that during the weekend sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk APP |

I don't hear how his stayed on his feet. The famous picture is him stumbling, but not falling. And, as you said, it was 11 years ago. I wonder if that pedestrian even remembers what they were doing that long ago...

Actually, RED cameras are not particularly uncommon, and apart from the latest models, not particularly new. The first RED One's were delivered just a year after Gen II was introduced. It's not the slightest bit unusual to see one (or more) at any given movie or commercial shoot. Heck, I had a RED Epic in my house for the weekend, two years ago, and I'm not even in the business. According to the video, the stabilization system was used "in all the Harry Potter movies", the first of which was released in 2001. |
