I pulled the elastomer gear and sleeve and replaced them with the new parts. I did both sides. It wasn't terribly difficult, but I was very thorough with cleaning - alcohol did not work very well, but after first trying it out on the old parts, I cleaned everything with mineral spirits. I was careful not to touch the neoprene sleeve with the mineral spirits though. Of course, the new parts did not need to be cleaned.

I didn't want to damage anything, so I bought a gear puller to remove the old parts. I s'pose I coulda just broke them off, but who knows, maybe I will need them in case of an emergency.

Putting the new parts on wasn't as easy as I thought. It's a very tight fit and it needs to be started straight. I used a deep socket and rubber mallet to "press" the new parts on.

The glide was noticeably smoother and my Seg didn't seem to groan as much under strain. It's still showing its age though (it's 10 years old and I've had it for 7). I spoke with the tech at Segway of Oakland and mentioned that I drop my Seg out of the back of my minivan without using a ramp. He said I should not be doing that, especially as much as I've done over the last 7 years. It's just so much easier than setting up the ramp, then folding it back up (my lung function is so little that any savings of exertion lets me do more other stuff). I guess I will have to change that habit.

Thanks for all the help you guys have given. It's much appreciated.

Jim

That is good to hear the 170 is performing back to normal, Gen 1 is very durable and it should last another 5 years with ease.

While dropping Segway from the back of the mini van (110lbs) is not recommended, compare to jumping of a sidewalk when riding (over 250lbs), it has less impact (not recommended but we all do)
The low tire pressure and plastic rim absorb the impact pretty well.

Hey Jim... How about dropping some old carpet pad on the road before you drop your seg... That should cushion the fall a little.

Or maybe the cushion from lawn furniture.
