I167 issue
Good morning, Seggers,
It's been some time since I've posted, mainly due to a rather prolonged bout of illness which put both me and my I167 out of commission. Thank G-d, I seem to be recovering, which of course has reawakened my desire to Segway. But unfortunately I am experiencing problems doing this: 1. When recharging my Lion batteries, I get red on the left, green on the right. 2. When I key on my Segway, I get a full red window, with a wrench on the right side. If this merely connotes a battery problem, I am quite willing to send my Lions off to rehab, or even a full rebuild. My fear is that I may also have a Control Board issue, which would leave me with good batteries at considerable expense and still no operable Segway. Can anyone offer me advice? Thanks so much, - Tomamil |

Put two "known" good batteries on the unit to insure the base is not an issue as well.

If you have good batteries available, swap them in, and see what happens...
If you do not, then swap the batteries from front to rear, and see if the red LED follows the battery... Even if it still does not work, if the red LED follows a particular battery, then it is likely that the battery is bad. Not a conclusive test at all, but at least a good indicator...

Lots of good advice above.
Also, check the Error Code meaning on the wiki site: http://social.segway.com/wiki/Error_Codes#System_Faults Good luck!

Same problem
I had a similar problem almost two years ago with on of my i-180's.
I took batteries off another machine and the "original non-starting" started right up. I ordered two new (not rebuilt) batteries...they arrived almost two months later. I put them on the machine which had been working fine AND...red screen with wrench. Meaning "platform fault". I sent the unit to San Francisco to a dealer who assured me that he could fix it. All I lost was more time and the cost of shipping the platform back and forth via UPS. Still didn't work. Last October and the mini-SegFest in Washington, D.C., I asked Dick Seger from Segway Annapolis about it. He said it sounded like the software on the platform had gotten corrupted from not having power for so long. He said something about "unlocking the platform" and "trying to reinstall the 12.?? software that the i-180 had". (I kinda nodded my head up and down like a "bobble-head doll" because I had no idea as to how these things could be done.) I now have five Segways (four working, and the one with the dreaded red-wrench code.) The non working Segway works fine as a auxiliary charging stand, and I hope to see Dick sometime this Fall in Annapolis when we are in town for a wedding. If you need to borrow batteries, I am sure that there is someone near you, who as a fellow "Seg-Head", would let you try his. If not, I'd be happy to bring some extra batteries with me in September...but that's a long time to wait. Jason, at MTO Battery, in Wrightsville, PA (about 50 miles West of Philly) would be an excellent resource if you are able to make the drive. About batteries, the two batteries that I ordered would only work with each other. Install one original equipment battery, and one new battery and a sign came on the screen that said "Unlike Batteries Installed". The machine then shut down. |

Thanks to everyone!
Jason of MBO has given me some good info also, and I think I'll send in one of my batteries to him for refurb.

MTO Battery Rebuilders
Just a quick note to endorse MTO. After multiple attempts to recondition my failed LION battery, they offered to do a rebuild with fresh cells and credited me for the recondition attempt. I accepted the offer, and the rebuilt battery arrived a few days later. Plugged it into my i167 and worked like a charm.
Very good company! |
