Afterward, clean the threads well. Strap Wrench example: http://www.homedepot.com/p/TradesPro...0007/203123319 Last edited by dale@thecoys.net; 04-23-2015 at 11:16 PM.. |

This is a very common problem. Went through it myself with two units less than a year ago. The strap wrench is a necessity if you don't want to mar the plastic ring. In addition any type of penetrating oil (like WD-40) will help. I finally had to heat the rings up with a propane torch to loosen them up. You need to be very careful with the torch to avoid melting the plastic.

Afterwards, you may be better off using a dry graphite lube to prevent this happening again.

When the collar is "stuck", the design of the mechanism makes it really difficult to get any penetrating lubricant at all to the threads. So, that usually isn't much help.
The time to deal with that is when you have it apart and can apply it to the threads. |

I find that after using a strap wrench you should apply Teflon tape to the threads so it doesn't happen again

This is one of the most frustrating components of Gen 1. Once you apply the right kind of fix, tho, it doesn't have to be an ongoing problem.

Thank you
Thank you all for the input. It is with a Seg dealer for repair/eval. He had just emailed me the issue late one day and I posted the question before I spoke with him again. He did try a strap wrench and was just making sure that I had not done anything to purposely keep it closed. Have not spoke to him since.
Will definately take some of these measures when I get it back so it doesn't happen again! PS- no this is not why i took it in! |
