Ok - so after much work the dealer did get it loose with the strap wrench. Did mar the plastic, but it did not crack. So now that I have it back, what to do?
I have graphite powder- a small tube with pointy tip. I have used it in the past to "puff" into sticky locks, etc. Is this the dry graphite mentioned above? What is Teflon thread? Like a roll duct tape or strands like a spool of thread? Home depot? What do I do with them? Thanks for your input |

I have not used the teflon tape, but it is a good idea.
You wrap it on the plastic threads, as if it were a bolt. In other words, you wrap it and pull it tight, in the same direction as the threads tighten. This way, when you tighten the connector, the tape will stay in place. If you wrap it the other direction, then when you re-engage the other piece of the control shaft lock, it will try to loosen the tape instead of tighten it. When I wrap tape in an application like this, I try to overlap the first layer by about 1/3 to 1/2. Start at the beginning of the thread on the lower shaft end, and go around the threads, pulling it tight enough that it sinks into the valleys between the threads. If you overlap 1/3 to 1/2, as you go round and round, you will not build up thick spots, or several layers in one place. Go round and round, till you end up near the other end of the threaded section on the top of the bottom shaft end. Or... You can just use your graphite powder. That will work too. Thing about the graphite powder, however is that it will come out eventually. You might want to re-powder it every 6 months or so. The tape should be permanent, if you wrap it neat and in the right direction. If it moves a lot, you may have wrapped it in the wrong direction. Good Luck
