console cover removal
Hi - I've an x2 with a broken charger unit that I want to remove and repair - I can't figure out how to get the console cover off - I've removed the 4 star screws and then what? Does the rubber cover have to be removed from the plastic cover or do you have to get the plastic cover off somehow?
thanks in anticipation |

I've never done it, but have seen it done. The top cover is held on with a sealant which acts like a glue.
The top cover needs to be sliced off, but it frequently breaks, so the repair also usually includes a new cover. I have had this described to me in the past, but as I said, I have never done it myself, so I am speaking with 3rd hand knowledge of what you are dealing with. Good luck.

Having seen this done and done it myself subsequently, to replace the radio board- remember the old issue of i2/x2 s not starting in cold weather- even the official process is a little bit destructive. Having removed the four screws, a tool rather like a corkscrew is used to pull up on the cover, You can make one with a short piece of wood with a self tapping screw of an appropriate size screwed through the middle of this 'handle'. Rather like a traditional T shaped corkscrew, you screw the self tapping screw into the plastic recess where the retaining screw was so that the screw bites into the plastic. You then pull up on the handle to release the sealant. By doing this progressively on the 4 screw holes you can remove the cover without wrecking it. The only damage will be some gouging in the cover's screw holes which is hidden when you replace the cover screws. The radio board kit actually came with a new cover and gasket but the removed cover was quite serviceable, although you would have to spend quite along time removing the old sealant before reassembly. I think I still have the original tool I made so if my description is not clear pm me and I will send you a photograph

BTW, broken chargers were a real problem on the early Segways and as far as I know no one ever managed to find a circuit diagram. If you find a way to repair your charger, and they are definitely not simple, please post what you did here!
