So my curiosity got the best of me and I did some searching...
This goes back a while: http://www.justice.gov/crt/about/app...s_disright.php Spector v. Norwegian Cruise Line, Ltd. (5th Cir.) -- Amicus Title III of the ADA applies to foreign-flagged cruise ships doing business in the United States The district court erred in dismissing the barrier removal claims because of the absence of standards for new construction and alterations as to cruise ships Document Date Brief as Amicus[PDF] 04/03/03 Court of Appeals Decision [PDF], reported at 356 F.3d 641 01/12/04 but this one is current: Cruise ship that _features _ Segways! http://forums.segwaychat.org/showthr...ht=Cruise+ship A search here will give you several related threads and one of them finally led me to this: https://www.civilrights.dot.gov/site...ance2_3_11.pdf. You will have to scroll down to 39.5 and that area but it looks as if the ADA applies to foreign lines IF they pick up passengers at US ports. Since this didn't as far as I could find, address US owned lines I'm guessing that the ADA would automatically apply through Title III. That would mean that Segways must be allowed unless they have proof--not speculation or assumption --that this would be unsafe. The Australian link would seem to indicate a lack of proof... Sounds like we need to consult with the DOJ--and that may require a formal complaint. I'm totally swamped right now but it is worth noting that you do not have to be actually and personally denied access to file a complaint. Apparently, as I understand it, their statement of denial would be sufficient reason if someone wants to tackle the matter....

My sweetheart and I did a 2012 Cruise to the Coral Sea and a 2013 Cruise to Alaska. Both were on Holland America. I used my P-133 on the boat and offshore as well.

cruised with the Segway on Celebrity
Although I did not get a positive response from Celebrity's Special Needs department i thought i would just show up and see since I was driving to the cruise port (Ft Lauderdale). Worst case scenario I would put it back in the car
My Segway has a Segsaddle installed. I showed up and they were very polite and helpful, directed me on how to get aboard on a less steep ramp (3rd floor) and all was good for the rest of the cruise, no problem getting on and off at stops. |

Most people, I have found, when presented with the opportunity to do the right thing, will do it. Especially if you are looking them in the eye, and being polite at the time. I believe that each of these positive experiences are important not only to your personal quality of life, but also in that they allow for others to experience the positive side of segway experience. This makes it easier for the next person in that same position. Again, congrats. I hope you had a good time.

Segway and Carnival
Carnival specifically excludes Segways for the disabled on its ships. Staterooms with doors wide enough for wheelchairs can be requested.
Fire at sea is scary, I presume one worry is the Li ion batteries on the i2. All models so far discussed have nickel batteries? Has anyone successfully brought a Li ion Segway on a cruise ship? |

To get a Li-Ion segway on a ship will probably require a plane flight first which of course is not allowed. Also I use a P-133 on the ship and have never found a place where it won't fit.
As I said before, when "tender" is required I even toss my segway in. Try Norwegian, better food, better rules. Vote with your dollars! jeff

Li on
The segway i brought aboard was a gen2 with li on batteries, i had an accessible cabin. On a previous cruise with Celebrity I was Segwaying on the outside walkway. Somehow I was noticed by the security people and they came out and told me that they were worried that in rough seas I may be washed overboard.....that was weird and funny. They had no worry about the person next to me, just me on the Segway
