Default I took a spin on the new i2!

Segway of Central Florida is a great Segway dealership. Dave Holzapfel covers a lot of ground here in central Florida, and was in town the other day to service some of my friend, Jean Varn's, machines at her The Segway Adventure Segway tour company out on Clearwater Beach. So I glided out to say hello.

Dave brought out a new i2 and had it running and ready when I arrived.

Most of it is the same, except for the LSF which now has a straight extruded aluminum middle section with the same height-adjustment and tightening knob, although it's now threaded into a stainless stell "nut" instead of into aluminum. The lower part is now matte-finish black plastic and is not itself removable. The LSF is now bolted to this lower piece with two regular bolts. The handles and grips are the same.

The center console is lower with rounded edges and only goes half-way back between the footpads.

There were no perceptible differences in riding and handling.

One internal change Dave mentioned is that there are now two separate battery chargers, one for each battery, and their circuit boards are easily removable.

I think the new design is a good revision, and I'm looking forward to replacing our two 10-year-old i2s with these new models. Funny, we've kept putting off replacing the batteries because of the expense, but that hedging will soon pay off in the form of an upgrade to new machines.

One drawback for me is that I won't be able to use my Segway cable lock as there is no longer a stud on the LSF to clip it to. But the new plastic part is beefy and it has a hole in it through which I will be able to thread some sort of 3rd-party lock.

P.S. While I was gliding around, I started up a converstion with a man and his wife who were interested in the machine. They were visiting from Norway. They were aware of the recent legaization of Segway PTs in their country.

I gave them both demo rides and they did well and were very impressed with the experience.

I also mentioned the Tesla Sedan S and its introduction in Norway. The man was also familiar with that, and mentioned that one factor in its popularity was the fact that the government pays half of its price. Without the subsidy, the car would cost $200K, but with it, the cost is about $100K. Interesting.

Yes Dan, Dave is great Segway dealer and businessman. Even though I live in South FL I take my machines (P133's) up to Mount Dora when I need service. Like you, my Segways are about 10 years old. I've got to baby mine because the new models are not quite adjustable enough for me.
