When mine arrives (FedEx says it could be Friday), I'll measure it. The S5 promotional materials aren’t the clearest I've seen.
The wheels and tires are big, but 5 inches seems a bit much.

Nice that there are now a variety of devices available. Easier to find something that fits your needs. The minipro works for me on all kinds of rough terrain but people's situation might be different. The bigger wheels on the Airwheel look good.

On this Airwheel thing, did Segway lose control of their patent? The company claims to be making these things since 2004.

I'd like to know, too.
I was just assuming the company was paying Ninebot/Segway a royalty.

Didn't Ninebot pay their royalties to the Japanese guy who invented a two wheeled self balancing device back in the 1980's. Or bought the rights from him

The way I heard it, Ninebot came out with a self-balancing 2-wheel scooter and Segway promptly sued. In the midst of the legal battle, the Chinese company bought out Segway, lock, stock and a barrel of patents.

Na, the japanese guy had the drawings and idea as part of experiments like the walking or hopping robots. Dean was the one who made it happen when technology caught up with the old technology demonstrator the scientist made.

Everything is debatable. Especially if you see the old 1970 Looney Tunes robot Elmer Fudd used to hunt Bugs Bunny. A two wheeled self balancing robot violating Segway's patent and entertaining the seven year old me.

These are all important, I'll take them one at a time.
1. With the handle detached, it appears to weigh 78 pounds, much heavier than the Ninebot MiniPro (and the Airwheel S3). At the gym Tuesday, I picked up a pair of 40-pound dumbbells, and I'm sure I can lift it into the trunk, and as Duke pointed out, I should be able to use the scooter to help itself get up the half-flight of stairs.
2.It uses an assemblage of standard lithium batteries, that I can get from many sources. They claim they should last 5 years.
3. Ah... Safety, that's why I ditched the min I expect it to be better with the S5's much greater power and weight and big wheels, It's gotta be safer. As for durability, time will tell. Airwheel doesn't have the 16-year track record Segway has. One feature I think will increase its durability is that it has no gears to break or sap mechanical energy; it has two motors and each wheel is part of a motor. Since the engineering is a nearly two decades newer, I'm hoping that will be a plus, too.
That all said, I really wish I could've tried it out before buying. Fortunately, I got it used for an excellent price. If it doesn't suit, I'm sure I can resell it; maybe even make a small profit.
