Default Growling

I have a 167 and a 180. I run NIMH battery's on them and the 180 growls more often. Has anyone else noticed this, should I use lithium on it to resolve the problem or could it be something else?

Not sure what you mean by "growling," as the primary noise that comes from the Segway is generated by the gearboxes, not by the motors. So changing batteries wouldn't appear to do anything to help make the i180 quieter.

Gearboxes were originally tooled by a third-party that went out of business. Segway bought the tooling and moved gearbox production in-house in-between production of the i167 and the i180. I think that's the primary reason for the differences in noise levels -- exact same design, but different production lines.

Do you mean stick shake, where the Segway audibly 'growls' or grumbles and vibrates that what you are doing is either not safe or you are requesting too much torque etc.? That's normally a warning. The state of the batteries could affect this in some situations.

If you swap the batteries between the two machines, does the growling follow the batteries?

If you are talking about just general noise from the gearboxes then John's explanation makes sense. Would worn elastometers also contribute to more noise?

When I switch the batteries between machines the 180 seems to make the noise more often when I am maxing out the speed compared to the 167

That translation of that growling is "quit doing that!.

The machines are working as designed.

Just out of curiosity - why would you conclude, from this evidence, that the 167 is better?

Using the same batteries on both machines, same street, same speed and the 167 doesn't growl when the 180 does. Don't get me wrong it's not terrible just different. My first thought was the 180 draws more power but I guess that isn't the case

How much speed difference is there, between the "growling point"? [And how are you measuring the speed?]

Cool Assuming the 'Growl' is the same as the warning 'shake'

When the device shakes, that indicates something is wrong. If it's the batteries, the batteries could just be going bad. Perhaps the tolerance is different between the 180 and the older model.

If you are swapping the batteries between devices, you may want to CAREFULLY clean the battery terminals on both the devices and potentially the actual batteries. Don't do this without looking for instructions online.

In either case, your batteries are probably going bad. You may want to look into having them repaired / replaced.
