Default Gen 1 Steering Column Friction Lock

I am sure this has been discussed before, but I have been unable to locate the thread. My e167 packed it in (not sure yet why), and I got a used i167 from the local dealership.

The new one works fine, but the steering column friction lock gives me grief. It requires major force to lock, and even then it has a tendency to slide down. Similarly, it is very hard to unlock to adjust up or down. What is the remedy?

Those are a bit difficult since there's no "screw" that bolts them on so you can take the lower half (which grabs) off.

Clean the threads and the shaft and then dry.

Don't know much else to do, hopefully someone else has a better solution for you.

And then just a little bit of some kind of "dry lubricant" - teflon powder or molybdenum sulfide or graphite or ...

And then a "strap wrench" to assist with loosening and tightening.

Default Possible Solutions

It was recommended I try teflon tape on the threads. That worked, but did not solve the problem of the shaft sliding down. I added some electricians' tape above the threads which seems to do the trick. I always use the 'strap wrench'.

Teflon tape is so things dont leak water...

Something dry and powdered is a better direction for threads...

You need to first make sure that the shaft doesn't have any lubricant on it - and that the underside of the "fingers" on the outside tube doesn't have lubricant.

Perhaps you need to research what this discussion is talking about, rather than assuming what the Gen1 looks like.
