meltdown
Photos of another salt water submerged Segway, batteries was removed soon after water damage (it did meltdown and spurt out black smoke without causing fire) but sadly the Segway was still a write off.

Is salt water more conductive?
I can imagine that it will cause more corrosion in a shorter time, but does it allow for a greater short than fresh water in similar situations?

Yes, salt water is more conductive. And distilled, ultra-pure water is (for practical purposes) totally non-conductive. |

The soaking one we received was an X2 and the damage caused by owner's driver (cleans) the Segway. The driver deliver his boss's Segway to us in a SUV and didn't tell us the truth. He didn't even mention it was water damage, we have different SOP regarding moisture damaged unit.
We only realized it's water damage when we lay down the Segway (smells burnt) and saw the black water dripping out, we suspect the driver wash the Segway under a running hose or water blaster. He was very lucky, as if this event happened while he was driving on motorway, we might never received the Segway nor speaking to the driver in person. Sent from my iPhone 6 using Tapatalk |

It was on the back of my car on my SegVator. It was raining moderately all day long. I went in to work and it was fine. I left work and it was raining on and off. The next day at work it was not raining but it would not start. I tried it, I got one red light for a sec or so and then it shut off and no other response. So I went back home, took my other I2, and went to work. When I got back home from work, I tried again and no response at all from the Seg. I went to Segway of Anapolis (absolutely fabulous dealer, can't recomend them enough, well worth the 100 mile drive) and we went over it and found the meltdown. Water probably seeped in between the base plate of the main body (the part that has the foot sensors on it) and the plastic console that has the LEDs on it. Segway was toast. I have a brand new SE, but I make sure I cover them now religiously.

Ultra-pure water has a conductivity of 0.055 µS/cm or a resistivity of 18.18 mΩ. Salt water has a conductivity of 4.78 S/m or resistance of only 0.2 ohms.
