Default "Why Not Walk?"

I was riding on a street today and some guy standing in front of his house started screaming, "Why not walk?" at me as well as "Get some exercise!"

I pointed to the car in his driveway and yelled back, "You have a car. Why don't YOU walk?" But he just repeated "Why not walk?"

I guess I probably can't call the police for this - I mean, screaming in public is free speech, right - but sometimes I wish I had some recourse against people like him.

A relateable event occurred to me a couple years ago...

My children have some medical challenges, so the pharmacy at the local Walgreen's knows my family well.

There was a young lady, an assistant to the pharmacist, that I would often have a dialog with, most times thru the drive up window. At the time, I had a Volvo convertible, and we often had short, friendly and cordial conversations when I picked up a prescription.

One day, I showed up at the drive up window on my segway instead of my car. At that point, she asked me why I had not walked. I looked at her and asked if she had ever recalled me walking in the past. She said no. We discussed my home address being about 2 miles away.

She did not know it, but I did often go by bicycle, but on those occasions, I would park it and come inside the store.

Anyway, that day, I asked her why she would ask me why I did not walk when she saw me on the segway, but had never asked me when I was in my car. I also asked her if she had many customers who walked up to the drive up window, and she said she had never seen anyone do that.

She did admit that she had no idea why she asked me why I had not walked when she saw the segway, and it had never even occurred to her when she saw me in the car. She really had no idea why.

I suspect that has been enough negative image representations that many people have seen it and presume a certain reaction, but the knowledge of these exposures is so subtle that they cannot consciously recall it.

You are probably right. Mall cop, while entertaining, made it a joke, and that's the extent of most people's knowledge.

My favorite response is a cheerful, " I would if I could!" Which, while friendly enough, also puts them in their place.

If there is opportunity for discussion, I also assure them that, while not aerobic exercise, it is definitely body core exercise. After a long day on one in the beginning, everything from my armpits down ached. Even my rear end knew it had been exercised! Somehow, when you mention body core exercise it seems to put a positives spin on things...

Some of mine:

-"Am I looking fat to you?" (although there have been periods I couldn't use that one...)
-"Would you walk the 10 mile round trip I'm making in the next hour?"
-"This is my transportation equipment. My exercise equipment is at home."
-"Because this is a lot quicker and more fun."
-(In response to "lazy" comments) "I'd rather be thought lazy than rude."

I have tried to recall all the situations where someone has asked me why I was not walking while on the segway, and cannot recall a single time where that comment came from a walker or runner.

I have heard it more than once from people driving by, more frequently from the passenger. In that case, they were doing nothing at all to fight their frequent corpulence.

I have heard it a time of two where people were working at a drive up window, who were expecting a car. They never asked the car drivers the question, just the segway drivers...

Do the rest of us get this comment from people who are exercising? Or just the sedentary, like I get?

My experiences (only 2 if I recall correctly) were exactly like yours Karl. I remember thinking to myself "you could stand a bit of exercising yourself before you go advising other people" for the one heckler
