To the original question why a seg mod and not a wheelchair.
Two words, self balance. Simple. It's those front wheels that cause the hell for a complete SCI. Remove the front wheels and the snags, jars, bumps are gone. Everything else sped etc are just a bonus. |

Not sure I understand your point about the front wheels?

I'm happy to hear that, it means you haven't had to spend to much time in a chair yet!
The front casters are a snag waiting to happen. Even nice big ones. They make all rough terrain/poor sidewalks etc a biatch. In a pusher you can pop a wheelie to avoid having to back in over some tresholds. Many power chairs would require backing into places a Segway base would handle with ease. Now if I had any movement below injury I'd just put a seat on a Segway and screw the landing gear. Leen the damn thing against something and transfer. |

Wow!
I couldn't get the funds together in time. That puts it out of my price range. Back to self manufacturing another one-off inspired by the blumil design.

I use both a wheelchair and my I2 depending on the situation. I have a segsaddle on it and I can manage quite well with the segway, plus the speed, convenience, and functionality of the seg are quite superior. But if I have to be on it for awhile, the wheelchair is more comfortable for extended periods of time. And in a wheelchair, you don't have to be nearly as aware of your surroundings in that you can just "park" in one spot without any effort. With the seg, you have to go thru effort (minimal, but its there) to stay in a spot. Plus sometimes, depending on crowds, one or the other works better. Lastly, in cold weather, you may not have the same battery situation. So I just evaluation where I am going, what I am going to do, and pick which one is the best solution for the situation.

My answer will be similar to rwoynaro. I have a Segway, a small power chair (GoChair) and a lightweight manual chair. Oh, and a walker. I use whatever is appropriate for the situation. The Segway is brilliant for walks and trail hikes with my wife, and running errands in my neighborhood. But for longer activities, like going to a museum, I have to use a chair. My legs get too tired otherwise (my Segseat is good for resting my legs, but not long-term sitting).

I had not know about the GoChair, so I just checked out the webpage. Can you give me a ballpark as to the cost of one ? Thanks. |
