NiMH visual cues
Another battery question. I am planning to take my 167 on an airline flight. In preparation, I would like to be able to point out, without taking them out, the visible differences between banned Li-ions and my NiMH batteries should I be questioned at check-in. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

There is a bar in the center of the segway, underneath. The NiMH batteries are smaller, and this center bar is visible on the bottom of the segway between the batteries.
The LiIons are thicker, so they extend down more from the bottom of the base, and therefore extend beyond this bar. Because of this, the plastic housing of the battery has a small lip, or protrusion, that covers this bar. When both LiIon batteries are in place, this lip on either battery extends over this bar, and it will look as if the two batteries can almost touch. So, if you wheel a segway over onto its handlebar bag, and look at the bottom, NiMH batteries are an inch or more away from each other, if viewed from underneath, while LiIons will appear to touch each other.

The most distinctive feature of an NiMH Segway is usually that a person is pushing it.

The accessibility issue will trump the weapon issue if you have a reasonable need for the tool such as needing to take off the batteries. But, just fly Delta and take your LI-Ions with you. :-)

Change all screws to Philip taps and no need to bring a illegal screwdriver, airline will have the "+" screwdrivers to remove the battery and check if necessary

By the way, thanks to Amimoto's Photo, you can see that bar I spoke of on this unit with the NiMH batteries. IF this was the bottom of a unit with LiIons, the batteries would appear to meet each other...
