Default SEGWAY: SIMPLY. ROBOTICS. Whoa.

Hot off the press...

Segway Robotics, main page...

Autonomous personal Segway Robot that you can also ride. Estimated to go on sale this summer, with an SDK for software developers.

In the Intel keynote at CES, they had the "inventor of Segway Robot" make a cameo, and I believe he was from Ninebot. The Segway Robot spoke a somewhat broken English grammar that so I assume it was created by non-native-English speakers.

Segway Robot made the main stage at CES this morning. Here's an article from CNN:

Well, it's really cool to see Segway doing new things. I'm not sure what to think yet, but anything with the Segway brand on it gets me excited

Well, given their track record in robotics has been pretty inconsequential, anything is better than what they had. "The future is interesting" is hardly a strong marketing message, but it's how they're selling their robotics platform!

The problem with the robotics platform remains the same -- what does self-balancing get you that a traditional robotics platform can't perform without it? If a potential customer can't answer that question, then it becomes an orphan platform (which is what the last robotics platform was for Segway).

I think the new Segway Robot has a better angle for consumer sales because it serves the dual purpose of personal transporter and personal robot. The key factor will be how well the features work. If the following feature and home security/face recognition features work reasonably well then it actually has some utility to the average person beyond the cool factor of combining a PT and a robot but if it's just a useless gimmick then it's going to be dead in the water. I suspect third party software for it will be pretty minimal as well considering it's using an Intel Atom CPU which isn't the easiest for the platform but is good for Intel's interests.

The "arms" accessory they demonstrated is pathetic and useless. Arms that can be animated but without actuating grippers are just for looks. The interesting thing about the arms accessory though is that it shows they are open to third party hardware accessories which is what could cause this product to actually gain mainstream acceptance. Let's hope they don't require some difficult approval process for it.

Put another way, what does self-balancing on a scooter get you that a traditional scooter can't perform without it? "What's the point of putting a robot on a segway?" seems to have much the same answer as "what's the point of putting a person on a segway?"

Default The real RMP

Most of the RMP models have at least 3 wheels. The device I've seen used the most has a 4 wheeled.configuration that permits movement in any direction without turning and can work no matter which side is 'up'.

That being said, the Mini based robot platform is very exciting and different from any RMP Segway has offered. Hopefully, the device will live up to what was promised.
