Default Segway on Amtrak

Just got a new Segway i2 in 2016.

I am thinking about taking my Segway to Union Station in Chicago and boarding train to Milwaukee. Has anyone had experience taking Segway on Amtrak?

Let me know.

Thank you.

Rich

If you use your Segway as a mobility device, then you should be allowed. This is covered under "Operations Standards Update 12-33: Segway Personal Transporters permitted as a Mobility Aid for a Person With a Disability". Despite this policy I've almost been denied boarding, so you may want to have a copy with you, and discuss this when you make your reservation.

I'm not sure what the policy is if the Segway is not used as a mobility device.

Yes, I transported my Seg via Amtrak as my mobility device.
I rode it on and off the train via the wheelchair ramp.
We traveled from Salinas, CA to Portland, OR in July.

I first went online and made reservations/declarations, then confirmed
by phone. Attendants didn't bat an eye though it was the first one they had seen used as a mobility device. They were very professional. On the way north it was stowed in an empty seat, coming back south (full train) it was stowed in an employee area.

Enjoy!

9 miles round-trip with awesome views of the Gorge and the Columbia River, ZERO cars.

Springwater Corrider. Visit the waterfront and glide almost to Boring (and, it's not boring...it's Boring) 19 miles one-way!

Sites and glides are TNTC! If you can make it around May-October, you must try the Sunday Parkways.

Default Amtrak

I have taken my Segway on Amtrak several times in the past but every experience with staff was different. Some are more strict than others. I always asked a lot of questions to the employees before getting on. Find out what they recommend.
