You might also consider fully charging the batteries and removing them from the machine if you do not intend to use them for a little while. This would be the best practice if you plan on storing the machine until spring.

The exact same thing happened with my other I2 yesterday in equally cold weather. Once they warmed up a bit, all was normal.

Still, I am totally greatful that the segs seem to be able to handle this cold blast reasonably well, as I have no alternative, I need the seg to get around.
12 degrees out this past Saturday. my I2 was outside for at least 1 1/2 hrs on the back bumper of the car. I went to a large shopping mall complex. I was expecting the ! mark on the info key when I started. I powered up, and got that as I expected. Since my wife was with me with the car, I decided to see how much of an issue this would be. I glided to another store probably 3/4 of a mile away. I figured if the Seg died, she would be there with the car and I would be okay. The ! mark to me behaves similarly to when you get the speed limiter and the leansteer pushes back and slows you down. Within 50 feet, it slowed down to only a few mph of forward speed. I was gliding across a parking lot limited to a few mph forward speed considering whether to just bail out and call the wife and load it back up on the car. I have a seat on the I2, and I forced the center of gravity forward and it suddenly went to normal operating mode, full speed available. I went to the food store ( that was way too cold for how I was dressed) a good 1 /2 mile away and was in the store the whole time with no further issues. I checked the infokey and I was down a few power bars (had a full charge to start with), but as it warmed up, they came back. So for me, if I leave it outside in the cold, say 20 degrees or lower, it will give me an ! on the infokey and try to limit my speed, but if I shift the center of gravity forward and force the issue, it returns back to normal operation. Interesting, but I am mostly just greateful that it still functions in that environment.

The other consideration for your story is that after running for a few minutes, the batteries do generate a bit of heat internally, and it may have been enough for them to start to operate better.

Anyway you cut it, it was a good finding.

Didn't think of that, that's good news. It was about 18 this morning, and I experienced the exact same behavior on my other I2 this morning, so I am confident this seems to be the way they act. All's good.

Just a little more info on what I am experiencing. It's very cold this week also, single digits. Yesterday, I got to work, started the I2 okay, but got the ! on the info key within about 5 secs of gliding to the door. I expected that and kept going. I got to the door and punched in my access code and turned to go in and the Seg went into safety shutdown on me. First time that happened. I had just enough time to get thru the door and into the little vestibule before it shutdown, so at least I wasn't outside in the dark and cold, and was able to grab some support to hold it steady while I got off. Its a bigger deal than with able-bodied people, when you use it basically as a wheelchair. But I managed okay. I think I made too sharp of a turn and it exceeded whatever params it uses, it seems to me to be trying to limit speed when cold.

So today, I tested that theory out. Equally cold this morning. I went slower and the ! didn't come on as soon. I made slower, wider turns, and it didn't have any issues. If I would go faster, it would issue the !. So I am thinking that when it is really cold, whatever sensors it uses behave differently, or the s/w is coded to act diff based on temp, as it seems to just want you to glide gentley, slowly, and smooth wide turns. The ! would come on at like 3 or 4 mph or if I made turns. Slowing down caused it to go away.

Once it's inside and warmed up, its back to normal performance pretty quickly. Since the weather is going to be this cold for awhile, I will keep testing out this idea until I get some confidence in my understanding of what to expect. Is there any mechanical connections inside that could be binding up because they are cold and adding resistance that the seg interprets and tells the user to slow down ?

It is almost entirely an issue with the batteries not delivering enough power when cold. When it got really cold here, I would start the segway up 20 minutes or so before my ride, and just let it sit against the wall while I got ready, made my coffee, etc.
