A secondhand segway / used segway checklist ?
I am going to add this post into an updated version of the Segway Code eBook (written by a Yahoo ) but thought I should air it here for comment. It basically represents the snippets I have picked up off the forum over the years, including a few checks I have thrown in myself (mainly common sense).
Also, I had the idea earlier in the year about trying to indicate a "book price" for used machines. This might be one step towards that... I never let a good (or bad) idea go! Buying a used Segway All of these points are things to consider - particularly when trying to establish a fair value for the machine. Maybe a few points could be used to help when bartering? Generals checks (applicable to all Segways) Check:

General buying advice applies whether you are purchasing a Segway, a car or any high value item:

Hmm. Maybe if this list turns out to be useful, perhaps it should go in the Buy/Sell forum?

second hand segway
That's a very helpful list, all though it is very long.
If you care about the looks and stuff that's fine but if you want to buy a segway in good technical shape you have to check only this: Milage. (when renting a segway in 5 month it does around 1500 mi and more, private persons usually does 100-600 mi). If it is more than 1500 mi most likely the elastomers are worn out, you can check that when going fast and trying to go faster that the limit is and when slowing down fast (you'll hear a noise and feel vibration). The same test can be done to see if the batteries are good or close to death (at that point the charging lights can be green but the batteries won't hold for long). Check the batteries serials (usually they are almost 1 year older than the segway). Both batteries should have almost the same manufacture date. If you are checking the batts just by looking to the leds than you should wait a long time because usually the red light appear at the end of charging. Also check the wheels if they are not bent and take them off to check if there are no additional parts between the axle and the wheel to make it look straight. If possible ride the segway at least for one hour to see if it does not pull to one side (it can be the pivot or BSA and these are expensive). These are just some of my experience with segways. The most common failure is batteries so check them well. |

Good advice all, but I thought I heard of a batch of batteries that had some red lights in the charge cycle, yet were good.
I never had such a battery, but did hear of them from more than one source. Are they still on the market?

I'm a little late to the party here, but can anyone tell me how to decipher the unit serial numbers and battery serial numbers now that the Social Segway site links are all dead?
Thanks, Mike |

Funny enough, the information that's dead on Segway Social came from our community originally, so here it is again:
Structure of Serial Numbers: YY2WW1NNNNNN YY: Year of manufacture (07 = 2007) P: Manufacturing Plant (1 Manchester NH, 2 Bedford NH) All shipping units are most likely 2 WW: Week of manufacture (01...52) 1: Always "1" so far NNNNNN: Real serial number, started with 000001 in March 2002 and incremented by one with each Segway produced. No. 1 production series is in the Ginger Museum, the chassis cover signed by every employee who worked there at the time. [2] ------------------- BTW, if batteries have been replaced -- as they inevitably have on any Gen 1 machine -- don't expect the serial numbers to match up. That's perfectly normal, just ask when the batteries were replaced. John

I am surprised that no one else has asked about this since 2010!
