Safety shutdown quiz
Ok here's the scenario;
You're gliding along and suddenly the stick starts shaking, it starts beeping, red flashing sad face and the speed limiter has kicked in. For some reason you choose to ignore the safety shutdown and continue without stopping. It will: a. Shutdown after 10 seconds regardless of your forward motion b. Shutdown only after you have come to a stop (assuming the batteries aren't depleted) |

I don't know... mine has always slowed to a stop before shutting down.

Its more like 30 seconds, but it will do a safety shutdown at some point, even with you on it! That means slow down, get off ASAP if you value your bod.

c. If you crawl along at less than about 0.5mph, you can go a little bit longer before complete shutdown (I forget exactly how long... 30 seconds or so?) However, if you stand there looking at the red unhappy face, or if you continue riding at anything more than a very slow speed, you get 10 seconds to dismount before you do a faceplant.

It depends on when you want to start counting the clock -- when the initial low-battery warning bee-boop bee-boop sound is happening, it's not going into the safety shutdown yet.
It's when you get the squawk from the powerbase and the stick shake starts that you have about 10 seconds to step off; or the Segway will shutdown right then and there. http://www.pasadenasegway.org/ See you all at SegFest 2003! (August 29.) Register now at www.segwayfest.com |

The answer is b.
I discovered today how to make the Seg go into safety shutdown. If you do not stop, it will not shut down. I tried this in my basement by riding around in circles with one foot on the platform and the other on the ground. Not a very graceful sight. Very noisy too. The instant you stop it shuts down. It might matter *why* it's doing a safety shutdown as well, but my experience is that the Segway will slow you down to a stop (so much so that you have to lean over the front of the machine to make it move forward) and won't shut down until it has made a very annoying BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP'ing noise
You can see my other thread for info on this. I've done it on at least 2 machines with different software (including the latest). But then again, it's generally smart to just slow down and calmly step off when safety shutdown goes into effect. There's probably a very good reason why the Segway is trying to get you off! Chris |

Some versions can do htat yes. But you've induced the shutdown (With wet fingers and a screw and a keyport I imagine) I assume you had battery juice left.
But in a real shutdown it will eventually drop you on your face. Why you would want to do that I don't know. |
