Is there a key code on the Segway key? I've never looked that close...

No, the key code is programmed into the memory of the key. You can't see it with your eyes. Only with special software, using a special connection to the key.

and I guess this is what some of this post is about. So I guess, since I don't have the original paperwork on my I2, that getting the ID from my key would entail doing a lot of what has been discussed here, with hardware and software, correct?

Yes. But why do you want the ID?

Think of the key as a 'USB Stick'.

It is just a device to hold data.

It is in a colored plastic thingy so humans can tell one key from another.

The Segway can read the key.

If you can write to the key, you can create a custom key.
You need to write data, in the correct format.
The data includes;
Segway info
Keycode for the particular Segway
Speed info.
Steering info.
Error correction coding too.

So, yes, it is well thought out and robust. Just not dead simple.

Now, what was the real question ?

Just a look ahead really, in case I should loose both keys, which could happen in this house... has the software/hardware changed that much from the 2006ish post on this subject? I'm wondering if I could use a desktop/win7 and a few hardware software purchases?

The iButton is just a memory device.
It is an industrial standard.
Being a technical industrial standard, it is not as simple as writing to a consumer device like a USB stick.

Yes, you can read and write to an iButton.
To do so, you need 2 things.

1 Hardware ( well under $100 last time I looked ).
There are various styles, including some that are Windows / PC compatible.

2 Software ( free last time I looked )

Once you have the ability to read/write to an iButton, you then need to have a little info about the format of data needed to be written.

If you are concerned about losing both of your keys, get one copied.
Or if you like, get the hardware and software above, and simply read your iButton / key contents.
With that info stored you will be on solid ground in the future.

Okay so I'd like to get the hardware /software, and reading all of this post has many options for both. Since I have 2 keys, I can screw one up and still get it fixed with the other one if needed. Could you or someone here suggest a place to start? I am somewhat computer competent, but this is new territory.

OK.

Here's a link to the type of harware that you could use;
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Maxim-DS1...-/272234494660
You will probably find a vendor closer to your location.

Here's a link to the software you will need;

Good Luck.

Yea! It sounds like there are still folks who program iButtons for gen 1 machines. Would any of you be willing to program a few keys for me. I just bought 2 used Gen 1 Xt's. I have working Black and Red keys for both. I'm looking for someone who would be willing to make spare Reds and some custom Red speed with Yellow turning (to make for a safer ride).
