Default Gear box noise on i2.

I am loving my first Segway. It's a 2010 i2. According to the info key, it's got 3,100 miles. I wouldn't have guessed that much by looking at it, but I assumed it's accurate. I don't imagine those miles were logged on another machine, but I can't say for certain.

Anyway, there is a fair amount of gear noise while gliding. Is that typical? I know straight-cut gears are always noisier than helical, so I haven't worried about it. In a thread in the DIY section, a gentleman opened his gear boxes and found the oil to have quite a few metal shavings. He then remachined the end of the main shaft in order to install, what appears to be, a hardened/ground cap. Has anyone else ventured into such waters? I have a lathe that can easily turn tight tolerances. I am considering trying this retrofit on my machine to see if it helps quiet it down (and preserve the life of everything in the gear box.) Are the gearboxes fairly straightforward in their disassembly/reassembly?

Default Some Ramblings

Try searching this site for “Replacing i2 Elastomertic Couplers' for a good introduction and discussion.
Seem to remember a video posting as well but can't find it at the moment.

As for gear noise. How much is too much. Compared to other (older) SEGs I've glided with my yr-2010 i2 seems to have louder gear noise. And it varies greatly with loading. That said, the noise does not seem to have changed over the 9,950 miles glided so far.

Your 3,100 miles is a like new machine . . . still on the first set of tires. Or you could have a machine with 13,100 miles. Do you get the standard smile face or a wink face to indicate the counter has rolled over?
