Is Usain Bolt Faster Than A Segway?
This cameraman probably feels terrible, and almost certainly ruined his equipment.

Just another case of distracted operation of a powered vehicle!

Guys, I saw this news break earlier today. But since looking at the unit in more detail, I'm left wondering is it actually a genuine Segway PT?
Firstly, the centre console looks different to me. The fenders look different too. Obviously the LeanSteer Frame is modified for the hands-free but not quite right. No Segway medallion either. And the batteries look different from underneath. I'm not certain as I'm not familiar with the SE range but could this be a Segway clone? Not that it would alter the outcome of the incident much but it would be great to confirm it is not a genuine PT. Any thoughts?

I agree it doesn't really matter whether it was genuine or not in terms of the outcome. It's entirely the rider's fault like most Segway accidents. But it doesn't look like a genuine SPT to me, modified or otherwise. And not an XT for sure. Tyres, fenders, batteries, centre console etc. look different. It looks like a Segway clone modified for hands free. Still, I'd love to know for sure.

I'll allow you your clone theory (;-)), but this incident rather points up a flaw of hands-free gliding: recovery potential after a surprise "upset." Though I maintain a certain lack of sympathy for the cameraman, as he should have been more vigilant and more practiced in Segway—especially hand-free—gliding, I think (and I see with this video) that hands-free takes away a fair bit of controlability in such a situation.

I posed the question to Segway Inc and they responded to confirm it was not a genuine Segway PT.

This is a different image of the device in question. From this angle, I think it looks like it may be a segway...
Of course, I have not seen a clone with the floor pad off either...

It is a Segway. Obviously a modified one. I don't think anybody had a good reason to think it was not a real segway.
