Agreed, it is a nightmare.
Of course a gen-1 machine ( XT ) can run with NiMH batteries.
Maybe you could get one of these, just for travels.
It could also serve as a back-up, in the event you have an X2 probem.
Might work out cheaper and better, than trying to 'work' the system.
