I think that there's both;
An Odometer
( Reads total machine miles )
A Trip Meter
( Reads current miles since last time the Trip Meter was reset by the user )
Maybe you are moving between Odometer and Trip Meter, without realizing it.
I forget the detail of moving between those two, but info is in the manual.
