segway i180 grip
 

Hi,
Does any one knows how the grip works? (for i180)
Is it Potentiometer?
if yes what are the values?
Does any one try to put something instead the Original grip

It's based on magnets located on the turning part of the twist grip. The stationary part of the handlebar contains a sensor that is reported down a wire to the control board inside the handlebar.

Hall Sensor(s) + Magnets
 

Hi

From memory;

There are Hall sensors within the handlebar ( that are not readily visible ).

There is a pair of magnets ( small short rod/cylinder style ) in/on the twist grip.

Thus there's a weatherproof link.

Error conditions include:
1 A magnet is missing.
2 A magnet is installed in the wrong orientation.
3 Both magnets are installed in the wrong orientation.

disassembly handle-bar
 

Hi,
Does any one knows how to disassembly the top handle of i180 - in order to get to electronics - LCD display, I couldn't find any screw?
it seems like one part - however in broken parts I see that this is from 2 parts ?


Also found out that what I missing is only Magnet, all the handle right/left electronics is inside the handle:cool:

I have not worked on gen 1 for many years, but found mine to be glued shut, so I had to cut mine open. (then re-glue them shut).

As you can see from this photo (in my photo gallery at upper right) I did run several light switches, a horn button, and other accessories up thru the control shaft and to the handlebar.

In this photo you can also see my bike computer, as I had added a magnetic pulse counter to one wheel, which gave me speed, odometer, and many other functions. I also had temperature sensing on this unit, so that I could maximize range by not letting my NiMH batteries get too hot or too much hotter than the ambient temperature.

I also had a rear view camera with monitor on the left hand grip, but you cannot see it well in this image.

fixed segway today (i180)
 

Hi,
one of the Segway I bought seems to be ok after fixing the broken handlebar, till I have lowered the handle-bar to minimum height.
I could disassembly that handle-bar and replace the two wires (ends with black and yellow connector) easily.
It seems some inside the wire some of the contacts not working very good (I guess this is a common problem)
These 2 wires are connected with connector that is covered by heat shrink (which can be cut if doing it with care)
I had 2 wires from another device that looked better to me
Things to remember is to make strength relief with a binder same way as you open it, also to bend the connector wire and use tape & cable tie to connect everything good when closing it
There is a 5mm screw at the top of handle-bar which should be removed in order to get to these wires, also need to turn the handle bar 180 degrees to release the wires:rolleyes:

This is a fairly common problem in that the coiled wire will be pinched by the inside of the upper control shaft as it is lowered to the lowest position.

Some have gone around this by providing a support structure that keep the wire in the center of the shaft, so that it will not be at the outer edges where it can be pinched.
