American Airlines allows Segway?

From their webpage:
"Segway® Human Transporter Device
Batteries on the Segway® Human Transporter are lithium, similar to a laptop battery, and do not require removal or any disconnection of the power source. If this device is used as a mobility device, it may be stowed in the cabin on a first-come basis. Customers may ride their Segway to the aircraft door and guide it into the closet. It can climb stairs."

That policy was written by someone who has probably never seen a Segway OR an airplane. I don't believe there is any way it will fit in an airplane closet. And as for climbing stairs.....

HUH? Boy, I'd sure like to challenge them on this and DEMAND that they accept my i2 on the basis of this published information. I've taken my 167 in the hold with no problem. and when I got to my destination I was the last one off and the grounds crew were standing around at the door of the plane waiting to see me ride it off into the sunset.... They had never seen one before....

This information is not correct! The lithium content contained in the batteries powering the i2 exceed that which is permissible to be transported on a passenger carrying aircraft.

The link which is provided, while active as of last week, is not a link which is provided to the traveling public through the AA.com website. American Airlines is investigating this and it appears to be provided to travel agents which was somehow overlooked when updating their website.

American Airlines is aware of the prohibition and also aware of the fact that the i2 at the moment is only operational utilizing lithium ion batteries which exceed the permissible level of lithium.

Thanks QuadSquad

When you here something to goog to be true it probably is.

The Segway HT (pre-gen2) models can all use nickel batteries.

XT cannot, I believe.

I am trying to recall, but I believe this may be true that the XT did come out with LiIon batteries. I know they came out around the same time.

Considering that the XT mileage range from the factory has always been about 1/2 of the I model counterpart, and the range for NiMH batteries for I (and E) models was only 8 miles, would they have offered a segway with a factory estimated range of only 4 miles? I do not recall this.

Because of all this, and my memory being what it is, I think that while pre-gen 2, the XT may have been released with LiIons.

What I do not know is if it was backward compatible to NiMH.

MTOBATTERY 04-17-2014 12:21 PM

Yes, the XT will function perfectly fine on NiMH or Li-Ion. To the best of my knowledge they were released with Lithium but I have (in many cases) used NiMH on an XT and had no issues.

Tritium 04-18-2014 01:14 PM

Jason, that's really wow!
I wouldn't have guessed such was possible on the XT.

Thanks!
